Having read Rooney's debut novel 'Conversations with Friends' I have to say I feel fairly similar about both of her books. Both, for me, have very similar story lines and characters - arguably characters which are struggling and are growing up and struggling to find their place in the world. Again, as with CWF, I was obsessed with this book and enjoyed reading it, even if I wasn't a fan of the characters or even the plot.
I think this novel did so well (it won Waterstones 'book of the year' for one) is that it covers many important issues and really highlights mental health troubles people growing up in this day and age are battling with. The book did gradually get darker and more sinister as the plot progressed and while I think this added to the storyline does make the reader feel rather bleak.
Overall I would recommend this book and I did enjoy reading it, even if the story line and characters weren't really up my street.
